Sleep Cycle Privacy Policy
We believe that transparency is the key to any healthy relationship. We appreciate that you are trusting us with information that is important to you, and we want to be transparent about how we use it.
Here we describe the privacy practices for Sleep Cycle. You will learn about the data we collect, how we use it, the controls we give you over your information, and the measures we take to keep it safe. Here are some key factors:
- We may anonymize, de-identify and/or aggregate the information that we collect and use such anonymized, de-identified and/or aggregated data for commercial, statistical and market research purposes, including sharing it with affiliates and business partners as further explained below.
- You own your personal data, and you’re always in control. Therefore we offer you several ways to control the privacy of your personal information and we’re constantly striving to improve the functions and features needed in order for you to be feel that you’re in control.
This privacy policy (the “Privacy Policy”) is here to give you all the information you need about what kind of information we collect, how we use, how we share it, how you control your data, and make sure you know your rights in connection to when you use our applications, platforms, software, websites, APIs and/or services (collectively, “Products and Services”).
When it comes to third party products or services or the practices of companies that we do not own or control, including other companies you might interact with in or through our Products and Services, this Privacy Policy does not apply to any third-party products, services or practices unless expressly stated otherwise.
This Privacy Policy establishes a legal agreement between you, as the user of Sleep Cycle Products and Services. Throughout this Privacy Policy we will refer to you as “you”, and we will refer to Sleep Cycle AB (as the developer behind Sleep Cycle Products and Services) as “we”, “us”, “our” or “Sleep Cycle”.

Processing of your information
Sleep Cycle relies on a number of legal bases to collect, use, share, and otherwise process the information we have about you, for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy, including:
- Where you have agreed to the processing. For example, if you have entered your email upon registering to our online backup service. Please note you can revoke this at any time.
- To fulfill the contract of service between Sleep Cycle and you as a user of our Products and Services.
- Where necessary for our legitimate interests (or those of a third party), and where your interests and fundamental rights do not override such interests.
- Where necessary to comply with legal obligation, a court order, or to exercise and defend legal claims.
- Where you have made the information publicly available.
Why we do this is, first and foremost, in order to provide you with the Sleep Cycle Products and Services that you wish to use. In addition, it is also to improve our Products and Services and to enable us to develop tailored offers to you as a user on a continuous basis, as well as to keep Sleep Cycle and our Products and Services safe and secure, protecting against fraud, spam and abuse etc.
Information we collect
When you interact with our Products and Services, we collect information that, alone or in combination with other information, could be used to identify you. When you sign up for or use our Products and Services, we may collect certain Personal Data, such as your first name, last name, email address, address, phone number, health and medical data, location information, user ID, purchase details (including purchase tendencies) and device information (such as device ID, usage and crash data).
For example, information is required to create an account for certain Sleep Cycle Products and Services, such as your email address and password. This is the only information you have to provide to create an account with us.
If you register for an account through your social media account (including Facebook and Google Sign-in), the information that we get from your social media accounts depends on your settings and the privacy policies of the social media platforms and you may see which of your friends are using the same or similar Sleep Cycle Products and Services (and they may see you), so please check those policies to understand the privacy practices of those platforms. Please also see the section below headed ‘Information from third-party services’ for further information.
We may collect your health and medical data if opted into through your device (such as through Apple Health, e.g step data), or health-related human subject research or other health or medical data provided by you.
How we use information
PROVIDE AND MAINTAIN THE SERVICES
Using the information we collect, we are able to deliver our Products and Services to you and honor our contract with you. For example, we may need to use your information to: deliver Products and Services ordered by you; provide you with our online backup services; enable the community features of our Products and Services; and/or to give you customer support.
IMPROVE, PERSONALIZE, AND DEVELOP THE SERVICES
We use the information we collect to improve and personalize our Products and Services and to develop new ones. For example, we use the information to: troubleshoot and protect against errors; perform data analysis and testing; conduct research and surveys; and develop new features, products and services.
We may also collect and use your location information in order to identify that location and to give you insights about, for example, how weather affects your sleep.
Sharing content in Sleep Cycle Products and Services
Our Products and Services may enable you to post content to third-party social networking sites (“SNSs”, e.g., Facebook). If you choose to do this, we will provide information to such SNSs in accordance with your elections. You acknowledge and agree that you are solely responsible for your use of any websites, platforms and apps of the SNSs and that it is your responsibility to review the terms of use and privacy policy of the third-party provider of such SNSs. We will not be responsible or liable for: (i) the availability or accuracy of such SNSs; (ii) the content, products or services on or availability of such SNSs; or (iii) your use of any such SNSs.
Information from third-party services
If you choose to connect your Sleep Cycle account for our Products and Services to your account on a third-party service, we may receive information relating to you from such other service. For example, if you connect your account to Facebook or Google, we may receive information such as your name, profile picture, age range, language, email address and friend list. You may also choose to grant us access to your activity data from a third-party service. The information is collected by the third-party account/service provider and is provided to Sleep Cycle under their privacy policies. You can stop sharing with us the information from such third-party service by removing our access to that service at any time.
Contact information
Should you reach out to us (e.g. via email or through our websites, platforms or apps) to get help or ask a question, we will respond to the contact information that you provide. The contact information will be used explicitly to communicate with you based on your request/question. We may also follow up and ask for feedback about how we can improve our customer services preceding a closure of your request/question.
Use across our services
Some of our Products and Services can be used together using a linked account so that you’re able to share information between our products and/or services. The purpose of doing so is to deliver even greater insights to you as you use our Products and Services. You can control this to your own preference in your account or through our websites, platforms or apps (as applicable to the relevant Sleep Cycle Products and Services that you are using).
Technical information
When you access our Products and Services, we may collect technical information from the devices you use. The information we collect includes IP addresses, timestamps, log files, device type and operating system, and device usage data such as app launches, taps, clicks, scrolling information, music listening data, video views, saved place in a game, video, or song, or other information about how the user interacts with the app. We use the information we collect to improve and personalize our Products and Services and to develop new ones. For example, we use the technical information to troubleshoot and protect against errors; perform data analysis and testing; conduct research and surveys; and develop new features, Products and Services.
Analytics information
We work with third-party service providers and business partners who provide us with analytics, support and advertising services from time to time. This includes: helping us understand how users interact with Sleep Cycle Products and Services; ensuring the stability and performance of Sleep Cycle Products and Services; serving advertisements on our behalf across the internet and/or measuring the performance of those advertisements. These third parties may use device-specific advertiser identifiers, cookies and similar technologies to collect information about your interactions with our Products and Services and other websites, platforms and apps.
You can turn off the advertisement-serving technologies in the settings of the device that you are using. If you turn the advertisement technologies off, it will not limit the function of our Products and Services or affect your user experience of them.
How We Use Information
We use the information we collect for the following purposes:
PROVIDE AND MAINTAIN THE SERVICES
Using the information we collect, we are able to deliver Sleep Cycle Products and Services to you and honor our contract with you. For example, we need to use your information to provide you with your online backup services; and to give you customer support.
When you allow us to collect location information, we use that information to provide and improve features of our Products and Services.
Sleep Cycle uses the information we collect to operate and improve our Products and Services as otherwise described in this Privacy Policy. For example, we may use your sleep information to provide you with “big data” statistics and key data points such as average sleep time in certain countries and, at this point, such data will be aggregated and de-identified from any personal data.
We may also collect and use your location information in order to give you insights about how weather affects your sleep.
We may use a third-party service provider to accept and process payments by you for our Products and Services. In such cases, you will be directed to a third-party payment portal and such third-party may collect information from you such as your name, address, bank account and/or payment card details in order to process such payments. However, Sleep Cycle does not obtain your bank account and/or payment details although we may receive your name and address details from the third-party in order to arrange physical deliveries for Products and Services ordered by you, if necessary.
We may also collect and use your location information in order to give you insights about how weather affects your sleep.
IMPROVE, PERSONALIZE, AND DEVELOP THE SERVICES
In addition, in order to analyze and improve our products and services, we sometimes use third-party providers to analyze and gain insight. The insights we look at are generally how our Products and Services are used, in order to help us improve them.
COMMUNICATE WITH YOU
We use your information when needed to send you Service notifications and respond to you when you contact us. If you have agreed to receiving emails from us, we may use your email address to send you service-related notices. If you have agreed to receiving marketing communications from us (including email newsletters or promotional materials), we may use your email address to send you the relevant marketing information. If you want, you can unsubscribe to all our email and/or marketing communications at any point. The information about how you unsubscribe is always presented in the email you’ve received. In order to inform you on updates to our Privacy Policy or Terms of Use, we may also use your email address.
Sharing of information
If you order products from us that require a physical delivery, we may share your name, email, delivery address and phone number with third parties (e.g. package delivery service providers) in order to arrange the delivery to you.
We may share non-personal information that is aggregated or de-identified so that it cannot reasonably be used to identify an individual. We may disclose such information publicly and to third parties, for example, in public reports about sleep and activity, to our service providers or business partners under agreement with us, or as part of the community benchmarking information we provide to users of our subscription services.
Only information needed to perform these specific actions will be shared with third-party services, nothing more. We will never share more information than necessary.
We will not share your personal information with any third party for third party marketing purposes unless you have expressly agreed to such sharing of information.
Service and Hosting Providers
Sleep Cycle may share your personally identifiable information with third parties (like hosting and market analytics) for the purpose of providing services to you. If we do this, such third parties’ use of your information will be bound by restrictions consistent with this Privacy Policy. We may store personal information in locations outside the direct control of Sleep Cycle (for instance, on servers or databases co-located with hosting providers).
Publicly available Information
This Privacy Policy shall not apply to any information you post to the public areas of our Products and Services. Comments posted to public areas may be viewed, accessed and used by third parties subject to those parties’ privacy practices and policies.
Legal requirements
We may preserve or disclose information about you to: comply with a law, regulation, legal process, or governmental request; to assert legal rights or defend against legal claims; or to prevent, detect or investigate illegal activity, fraud, abuse, violations of our terms, or threats to the security of the Services or the physical safety of any person.
If we are involved in a merger, acquisition, financing due diligence, reorganization, bankruptcy, receivership, sale of all or a portion of our assets, or transition of a service to another provider, your Personal Data and other information may be transferred to a successor or affiliate as part of that transaction. But all of this will be managed in correspondence to this Privacy Policy.
Information Security
Pursuant to applicable data privacy laws and regulation, Sleep Cycle maintains reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect information against accidental or unlawful destructions, loss, alteration, unauthorized disclosure or access.
We work hard to keep your data safe. We use a combination of technical, administrative, and physical controls to maintain the security of your data. This includes using Transport Layer Security (“TLS”) to encrypt our Products and Services.
Cookies
We may use cookies to distinguish you from other users of our Products and Services and to remember your preferences. This helps us to provide you with a better experience when you use our Products and Services, for example, when using our apps or browsing our websites, and also allows us to improve our Products and Services.
Your Rights
You can at any time contact our support at [email protected] to get your personal data deleted. You may also export some of your personal data connected to your Sleep Cycle account to a CSV file either from inside the relevant Sleep Cycle app or through our web service. If you have installed a Sleep Cycle app but are not a subscriber to our online backup services, you can simply uninstall the Sleep Cycle app in order to remove any data stored in the app. If you need any further assistance regarding your rights, feel free to contact us at [email protected].
Notifications and Email Preferences
It is our policy to provide notifications, whether such notifications are required by law or are for marketing or other business-related purposes, to you via email notice. If you inform us that you wish to cancel email newsletters, promotional materials or other marketing communications by selecting unsubscribe at the bottom of such email notice or by emailing us at [email protected], we will remove you from our mailing list.
If you no longer wish to receive push notifications, you may disable such notifications at the device level. Administrative or service-related emails (to confirm a purchase, updates to Privacy Policy, etc.) generally do not offer an option to unsubscribe as they are necessary to provide the services you requested.
Managing Your Personal Data
If you do not have an account with Sleep Cycle, no personal information whatsoever will be stored outside the device you use. But if you create an account with Sleep Cycle and log in, the information will be backed up and you can access your information across devices.
Deleting Your Data
You can delete specific recorded activities, for example, sleep sessions or comments posted by yourself.
To request the deletion of your personal data that we have, please email us at [email protected].
If you choose to delete your account, please note that while most of your information will be deleted within a few days, it may take up to 30 days to delete all of your information, such as the data stored in our backup systems. However, we may also preserve data for legal reasons or to prevent harm.
Objecting to Data Use
If you have a Sleep Cycle account, you can still prohibit Sleep Cycle from uploading your data to our servers by disabling any Online Backup feature in the relevant Sleep Cycle Products and Services.
If you have participated in our anonymous global Sleep Survey you may, at any time, stop participating by disabling the “Participate in survey” option under the Settings -> Advanced -> Profile menu in the Sleep Cycle app.
Users of iOS 8+ have the ability to share data from Apple Health with our Service. You have control over what data is stored and accessed between Apple Health and our Service and you can modify these settings at any time via Apple Health.
Data Retention
We keep your account information, such as your email address, and password, for as long as your account is in existence because we need it to operate your account. We keep other information, like your activity data, until you use your tools to delete the data or contact us for a full erasure, because we use this data to provide you with your personal statistics and other aspects of the Services. We also keep information about you and your use of our Products and Services for as long as necessary for our legitimate business interests, for legal reasons, and to prevent harm. If you wish to cancel your account or request that we no longer use your personal information to provide you with our Products and Services, you may delete your account by sending a request to delete your account to [email protected]. We may also delete your account if it has been inactive for a certain amount of time. Preceding the delete request it may take up to 30 days to fully delete your personal information from our systems.
Information about you that is no longer necessary and relevant to provide our Products and Services may be de-identified and aggregated with other non-personal data to provide insights, such as statistics of the use of Sleep Cycle Products and Services.
Our Policies for Children
We appreciate the importance of taking additional measures to protect children’s privacy.
Sleep Cycle does not knowingly collect Personal Data from children under the age of 16. If you have reason to believe that a child under the age of 16 has provided Personal Data to Sleep Cycle through any Sleep Cycle Products and Services, please contact us and we will endeavour to delete that information from our databases.
Changes to this Privacy Policy
Sleep Cycle reserves the right to change this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will inform you of any changes by posting the updated Privacy Policy through our mobile applications, on our websites and/or by email. If we make any material changes to our Privacy Policy, we will post a notification through our mobile applications and/or by asking you to review the changes to the Privacy Policy the next time you access our Products and Services. You may be required to review and accept the changes to our Privacy Policy in order to continue your use of our Products and Services.
